I first learned about these 2 remedies from Rosemary Gladstar but they have been around for a long time. They are simple and easy to make with ingredients you have right in your kitchen. You can use either one throughout the Winter whenever you feel ‘under the weather’ or at the first sign of a cold.
Onion Honey
I preach all the time about the benefits of onions and garlic. Onions are expectorant and can help coughs and expel mucus. They only 2 ingredients that you need are 1 large onion and honey.
- Cut up the onion, slicing them into half moon shapes.
- Place them in a sauce pan and add enough honey that it covers the onions.
- Cook over a low heat for about 30 minutes or until the onions are soft.
- Place it in a jar and keep it refrigerated. You can strain out the onions if you want but it’s not necessary. Adults can take 1 tablespoon.
If you’re more of a visual person (like I am), here’s a video that shows how to make it. Click here.
Fire Cider
This remedy is stimulating and gets things moving. It’s good for a cold or the flu. However, if you have a fire constitution, this can possibly make you worse. Someone who has a fire constitution usually has a red face, a high metabolism and typical health problems include high blood pressure, heart problems, anger, and sweating.
You’ll need:
- 1/2 cup fresh horseradish root
- 1/2 cup chopped onions
- 1/4 cup chopped garlic
- 1/4 cup grated ginger
- Cayenne. Just enough to taste.
- Apple cider vinegar
- Place herbs in a 32 ounce canning jar.
- Pour enough vinegar to cover the herbs by at least 3 to 4 inches. Place lid on top.
- Let sit 3 to 4 weeks. Shaking mixture everyday.
- Strain out the herbs.
- Optional: Add just enough honey to taste. Place in refrigerator.
If you need this sooner, you can strain out the herbs after 2 weeks but it won’t be as strong. Here’s a video that shows how to make it and probably explains it better than I just did (lol). Click here.
Have you made one of these remedies before? Or do you have a variation? Leave a comment and let me know.
Until next time…
